Artist's Comments
A Wehrmacht(armed forces of Germany from 1935 to 1945) belt buckle with the motto "Gott mit uns - God With Us". The swastica was removed from the German soldier when he was a prisoner of war. The soldiers could wear their uniforms, but they had to remove all swasticas. In the background is a prisoner of war camp Duty Pass for a Wehrmacht soldier and here [link] can you see a scan of the document.
Since the year 1701 Gott mit uns was the motto of the royal house of Prussia and later Germany. The motto was used as battle cry in the Thirty Years' War and of Swedish troops, too.
The belt buckle is a ground relict and was found in the ground of a former prisoner of war camp in Schleswig-Holstein/Germany, I have restored the piece.
